The Industrial Engineer will perform ongoing analysis of distribution processes, distribution center storage design, distribution center efficiency tools, and results to identify opportunities to improve distribution center efficiencies/productivity and reduce distribution-processing cost per unit. Manage the development of engineered standards process/program. Manage and maintain the Distribution Center’s continuous process improvement projects.

1. Labor Standards Program:
* Develop productivity tracking methods and department/associate level
productivity standards (interim leading to development of engineered
standards functionality/program).
* Define labor/productivity expectations specific to outbound retail functions
and outbound direct functions.
* Develop and maintain engineered standards for all measurable job functions
within distribution operations using time study and/or predetermined
standard data.
* Perform database analysis in order to gather baseline information and
generate improvement projections.
* Develop standard formulas by job function using regression analysis and
observation validation.
* Train managers to perform validation and counseling observations including
pace and skill rating, and employee adherence to Best Demonstrated
Practices.
* Lead the development/implementation of Vitamin Shoppe’s labor reporting
software program and be responsible for supporting the standard formulas,
reporting, and user training for the standards developed.
* Train managers in maintenance and use of the labor reporting system.
* Work with managers and associates on meeting and exceeding performance
goals through coaching, counseling and continuous process improvement.
* Complete miscellaneous project work as defined by the manager.

2. Slotting/Storage Design
* Analyze storage and storage design and develop effective slotting practices.
* Make recommendations for redesign of storage areas.

3. Staffing Models
* Develop staffing model tool to ensure distribution center staffing meets the
needs of work processing cycle time requirements and productivity/payroll
goals.
* Monitor and update staffing model tool to drive distribution center
productivity improvements.

4. Continuous process improvement projects Staffing Models.
* Analyze current work methods and procedures within operations and by job
function to identify opportunities for improvement using a variety of tools
that could include Six Sigma DMAIC and DFSS, Process Mapping, Critical
Path, Linear Programming, Lean Manufacturing, Bottleneck (Pinch-point)
Analysis, etc.
* Establish mechanisms for monitoring implementation results.
* Deliver $250,000 minimum annual project contribution in cost reduction
and/or revenue increase.
* Qualify and quantify key opportunities for improvement in operations and
return-on-investment; build a business case to implement and present to
leadership as appropriate.
* Develop an implementation plan for each approved initiative including team
member identification, roles and responsibility definition, and scheduling
milestones and timelines. This may include use of Six Sigma DMAIC and
DFSS disciplines as appropriate.
* Drive achievement of expected results for each program to assure optimal
success while providing frequent updates to peers and upper management.
* Act as a change agent, and build relationships to drive and sustain optimal
results.
* Work collaboratively with cross organization departments and systems and
sortation system to identify and implement process improvements.

May also be responsible for effectively managing employees in assigned functions by creating/sharing a common vision/direction and an understanding of the organization’s strategy. Deliver results in support of the company strategy and expectations; ensure operational excellence.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Directly impacts the organization through the establishment of credible engineered standards and quality programs that enhance the employee’s contribution, reduces operating costs, and improves customer service. Directly effects operational efficiencies and cost savings through delivery of $250,000 minimum annual contribution in cost reduction and/or revenue. Engineered standards will directly impact the distribution center’s ability to meet productivity goals and reduce operating costs. May have managerial responsibility for a small number of direct reports.

Requirements Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering, Industrial Distribution or a related field. Relevant work in engineered standards program may be considered in lieu of an I.E. or I.D. undergraduate degree.

Required Knowledge:
Familiar with distribution environment.
Relevant work in engineered standards program.

Experience Required:
Demonstrated experience in:
* Methods analysis
* Production standards
* Cost reduction, as well as productivity, quality and throughput
improvement.

Preferred experience in:
* Distribution and logistics operations
* Warehouse Management System functionality
* ISO

Skill and Ability:
Demonstrated competency as a change agent with the ability to manage and lead small teams.

Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills are needed to effectively communicate initiatives and drive key business initiatives through the leadership team, non-exempt populations, and cross functional teams.

Excellent project management skills with demonstrated analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills and the ability to drive results.

Proficient in the use of basic statistics and other analytical tools.

Highly organized and detail-oriented, ability to operate on tight deadlines with multiple priorities that are subject to frequent changes.

Must be able to interface with a multi-shift operation and physically frequent all areas of offices, warehouse and external trailer yards. 60% time in warehouse environment, 40% office, customer contact, external yard or trailers.

Demonstrated competence in the application and use of P.C. and operating systems. With proficiency in MS Access, MS Excel, MS Project, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, C.A.D, and Visio.

If managing direct reports requires previous leadership or supervisory experience. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain positive employee relations.
